Signs of a Healthy Cat You Can Check at Home

Caring for your anabul isn't just about feeding and regular grooming. Recognizing your cat's day-to-day physical condition is one of the most important things a pawrents can do — long before any worrying symptoms appear.

The seven signs below are ones you can check yourself at home, without any special tools.

Eyes

A healthy cat's eyes look clear and bright. The pupils in both eyes should be symmetrical. A little discharge in the corners of the eyes after waking up is still normal — but if there's excessive discharge, redness, or the cat keeps squinting one eye, that's worth watching.

Nose

A healthy nose is usually slightly moist and free of mucus. An occasionally dry nose isn't a big deal, but if it feels dry and cracked all the time, or there's yellow-green discharge, consult a veterinarian right away.

Coat and Skin

A healthy cat's coat feels smooth and looks shiny. When you brush it, the shedding is reasonable and not excessive. The skin underneath should be clean, not greasy, and odorless. If there are bald spots, crusts, or signs of excessive scratching, there may be a skin problem or parasites.

Appetite and Weight

The ideal weight for an adult domestic cat is generally in the range of 3.5–5.5 kg, but this figure depends heavily on breed and body size. What matters more is weight stability over time.

An easy way to check at home: gently feel Milo's ribs. At an ideal weight, the ribs are palpable but not visible from the outside, and the waist looks slightly tucked when viewed from above. Rapid weight gain or loss without a clear cause should be checked by a vet.

Energy and Behavior

Every cat has its own activity rhythm. What you need to recognize is your anabul's "normal," not the standard for other cats. If a normally active cat suddenly sleeps more, avoids contact, or hides longer than usual, that's a change worth noting.

Litter Box

The litter box is a window into health that's often overlooked. A healthy adult cat generally pees 2–4 times a day and poops about once a day, though it can vary slightly depending on diet and water intake.

Watch out for: straining with no result (especially in male cats — this can be an emergency), blood in the urine or stool, or a sudden, unexplained change in frequency.

Gums

This is the sign that's checked the least, even though it's quite informative. A healthy cat's gums are light pink — like the color of bubble gum — and feel moist to the touch.

You can check capillary refill time (CRT) like this: gently press the gum with your finger until it turns white, then release. In a healthy cat, the pink color returns within 1–2 seconds. If it takes longer than that, or the gums look pale, white, or bluish, contact a veterinarian right away.
